Project Gigabit

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced Oxfordshire’s inclusion in the next phase of Project Gigabit rollout. Contracts worth up to £114m will be procured by DCMS for delivery of gigabit capable broadband infrastructure to approximately 68,600 hard-to-reach premises in Oxfordshire and West Berkshire where public funding is needed to support private investment.

We welcome this announcement of significant additional funding for Oxfordshire to increase access to full fibre broadband. However the announcement acknowledges that more collaborative work is needed with DCMS and we shall keep Oxfordshire residents up to date with developments.

Meanwhile our Digital Infrastructure programme continues with delivery of the Businesses in Rural Oxfordshire project delivering full fibre to some 1,700 rural premises in the county, as well as launching the new Rural Gigabit Hub Site project connecting public buildings across Oxfordshire in partnership with DCMS.

‘Full Fibre’ broadband is the next generation of connectivity, which extends the fibre footprint established under the council’s Better Broadband for Oxfordshire programme, all the way into homes and businesses.

Project Gigabit £5 billion for fast, reliable broadband across the UK

Project Gigabit - Public Review Launch in Oxfordshire & West Berkshire

The government is on a mission to deliver lightning-fast, reliable broadband to everyone in the UK and is investing £5 billion in Project Gigabit to ensure that hard-to-reach communities are not left out. Building Digital UK (BDUK) is carrying out a Public Review to help identify areas in Oxfordshire & West Berkshire that may be suitable for future public funding for gigabit-capable broadband.

BDUK is seeking information and supporting evidence from suppliers - in relation to the presence of gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure within the project area.

They wish to hear from all relevant stakeholders - including the public, businesses, internet service providers and broadband infrastructure operators - particularly in relation to the proposed mapped eligible areas.

This Public Review for Project Gigabit ran from 4th Feb 2022 to the 4th March 2022. The intervention area for the project is currently being refined by BDUK, prior to the launch of procurement activity, later in the year. Further updates will be added when available.
